Langdon/Park St. Intersection to Close Monday-Wednesday, August 12-14

Due to utility work for the Langdon Tunnel Project Langdon Street will close in both directions of traffic between Park Street and the Red Gym beginning on Monday, August 12, 2013.   Access to the parking lot below Helen C. White will be from the west via Observatory Drive.   Accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists will be made.

Langdon Street will reopen to eastbound traffic only on Thursday, August 15, to provide an additional campus exit as traffic increases into the fall.

Week of August 5: MU Construction Blast_08.05.13

Though S. Park St. is still closed to vehicular traffic, there is a pedestrian/bike path that allows access north on Park St. at Langdon St.

July 2013

July 23 The tunnel project across the street will not reopen until October.

Elsewhere on campus, Walnut St. will be open by September 1 or a few days later.  That will divert about half the traffic on Charter St. coming from the west campus.  Also, the intersection of Highland Ave. at University Ave. will be restored even if there will be only one lane in each direction north of Campus Dr.

Furniture installation in Outdoor Programs will conclude the end of this week, paving the way for staff to move into their new space by the lake.  All office furnishings are locally-repurposed furniture.  This saves costs but is also sustainable and environmentally responsible.

Week of July 22:  MU Construction Blast_07-22-13

July 17 The handicap entrance to Memorial Union by Peet’s Coffee & Tea is now open!

July 16 The burst chilled water line is now repaired.   However as work continues in this area, the handicap entrance by Peet’s Coffee remains closed.     So the temporary ADA entrance to Memorial Union will continue to be the sidewalk to the Terrace in Lot 1, then up the ramp to the upper Terrace then into either Lakefront on Langdon or Der Rathskeller.   Additional signage is up to guide patrons.

July 10 Unrelated to Memorial Union Reinvestment (MUR) or other nearby construction projects, the line that supplies chilled water to Memorial Union ruptured underground in front of the building yesterday afternoon.  It will take at least several days to repair.

In the meantime this will affect how Union patrons access the handicap entrance, in cooling the building and add to the construction traffic on Langdon St.

Rerouting the ADA entrance:   Instead of going up the ramp via the outdoor Peet’s Coffee entrance off of Langdon St., the temporary handicap entrance will be the sidewalk to the Terrace in Lot 1, then up the ramp to the upper Terrace then into either Lakefront on Langdon or Der Rathskeller.   Additional signage is up to guide patrons.

Cooling Memorial Union:  Wall units and fans will help cool the building until the chill water pipe is repaired, restoring central air conditioning.

Accessing Peet’s Coffee:  During repairs Peet’s Coffee’s outdoor entrance will be closed, but it will remain accessible from inside the building.

June 13 Update:  the Lakeshore Path is now open from Limnology, through Hoofers and on to Memorial Union!  Please walk bikes through the Hoofer area as summer sailing classes are in full session.

Work is progressing rapidly near the Terrace on the MUR project.  Boldt Construction has removed more chain link fencing which is opening up additional seating areas, bringing the total to pre-construction levels.

The new Brat Stand will be fully operational and serving food and beverages starting today.

Week of June 3: MU Construction Blast_06.3.13

Park St. south of Langdon St will be closed until about August 20. One-way traffic west on Langdon St. passed Lot 1 will continue with right turns only allowed on Park. This means that Observatory Drive is the only way to exit west from Langdon and Lot 6 under Helen C. White.

May 2013

May 28 Observatory Drive is open! Starting next Monday, May 28, Park St. south of Langdon St will be closed; until about August 20.

Week of May 20: MU Construction Blast_05.20.13

Week of May 13: MU Construction Blast_05.13.13

Langdon St is Open! It’s two-way up to Lot 1 and one-way going west on Park St.

Park St circle: The MUR Project will be performing some utility work that will affect Park Street and the Park Street circle. The work is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 13 and should be complete by Friday, May 17. Park St will remain open though there will be a crane parked there so space will be at a premium.

Lakeshore Path: Starting Wednesday, May 15, Boldt Construction will begin laying asphalt onto Lakeshore Path as it runs by Memorial Union. This will produce some strong odor in the short run. This asphalt path is temporary. During MUR’s Phase 2 it will be replaced with permanent materials designed to complement similar work associated with Alumni Park.

Other nearby projects: Observatory Drive: Due to further complications with the sewer repair project at Radio Hall, starting Friday, May 10, Observatory Drive will be closed to through traffic from the Education Building to Radio Hall. So access to Lot 6 will be via North Park Street. This project is expected to last until Monday, May 20.

Week of May 6: MU Construction Blast_05.06.13

Friday, May 3, 2013 Update on Park and Langdon St construction: Due to utility work on the MUR project, from Monday, May 6 through Thursday May 9, Langdon St will close in both directions for vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between Memorial Union and Park Street. Langdon should reopen one-way going west on Friday, May 10.

During this short-term utility work, Langdon St will remain open both ways up to Lot 1, enabling delivery vehicles access to Memorial Union via Lake St. Pedestrians and cyclists should refer to this new map – 2013-04-01 Park Street Closure ADA Detour — to reach Memorial Union from Lot 6, Helen C. White and Observatory Drive.

April 9 Update on Park and Langdon St construction: The Park St access to Observatory Drive is estimated to continue to be under construction and remain closed until Friday, April 26. Unfortunately, after encountering unexpected delays due to leaky valves previously installed, the crews discovered that new valves are required. They are scheduled to arrive Friday, April 12. Keep in mind the weather is a factor as well.

Week of April 8: MU Construction Blast_04.08.13

Week of April 1: MU Construction Blast_04.01.13

Tuesday, April 2 Update on Park and Langdon St construction: The campus has developed an ADA detour route for people coming from Lot 6 and Helen C. White who are trying to get to Memorial Union (see map 2013-04-01 Park Street Closure ADA Detour). It involves traveling south on Park Street to the ramp at the base of Bascom Hill, crossing there and going through State Street Mall and Library Mall to Memorial Union. Left turn onto southbound Park St only from westbound Langdon continues; likely at least through Friday. Watch for further updates on changing conditions. For a real-time view of the construction and intersection, click here.

March 2013

March 29 Langdon Street will be two-way as far west as the entrance to Lot 1. This will allow delivery vehicles to exit from Lot 1 back down Langdon Street. See this diagram M Union Area Closures v032913 .

The Utility Project (not the Memorial Union project), which is already digging in Park Street just south of the Langdon intersection, will need to expand that hole farther north, which will mean that large vehicles, such as many trucks, will not be able to make the left turn from Langdon on to Park Street.Smaller passenger vehicles will still be able to turn left onto Park St. going south from Langdon St. For a real-time view of the construction and intersection, click here. This configuration will continue until further notice. Check here for regular updates

March 28 Update on Park and Langdon St construction: Left turn onto southbound Park St only from westbound Langdon continues. Watch for further updates on changing conditions. For a real-time view of the construction and intersection, click here.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to construction, Park St. will be closed between Langdon St. and Observatory Drive from 11 am today, Wednesday, March 27, through end of day Friday, March 29. Access to Helen C White and Lot 6 will be available via Observatory Drive only. Pedestrians will continue to be able to use this intersection. Memorial Union traffic will route westbound one-way on Langdon then southbound on Park St.
