Memorial Union Reinvestment

Students invited for first look of new preforming arts spaces

Construction progresses on the expansive new studio room.

The University of Wisconsin campus is poised to gain an incredible set of performing arts venues next summer when the first phase of the Memorial Union Reinvestment is completed. And now is the time for organizations across UW to get a first look at those spaces.

To be among the first to learn about these new spaces, students and campus organizations are invited to attend an open forum on Thursday, November 21 at 5:00 pm. The event will take place at Memorial Union, TITU. At the event, attendees will hear about the capabilities and features of each space and will learn how they can reserve spaces for rehearsals or performances.

Union and Theater staff expect high demand as soon as reservations become available.

The crown jewel of the Wisconsin Union Theater will remain the refurbished Shannon Hall, which will seat 1,150 following equipment, lighting, ventilation and stage upgrades. A space that has hosted John F. Kennedy, T.S. Elliot, Yo Yo Ma, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr. and Louis Armstrong – among many of the University’s top student performers – will once again shine as the premier performing arts venue on campus.

Meanwhile, the brand new Play Circle Theater is poised to be one of the project’s most exciting spaces. The black-box-type theater is entirely new and will be one of the most versatile spaces on campus. With seating set, the theater will accommodate 180. The seating is also retractable, allowing a wide open floor space for more intimate shows, comedy performances, dances, dinner shows and more.

The Play Circle Theater will also be outfitted with top of the line technology, lighting and sound.

Another new, dynamic space opening next summer is a two-story studio room. The space features an expansive dance floor and incredible natural light.

Interested groups are encouraged to plan reservations as early as possible. To reserve a spot at the open forum on November 21, contact Rose Gear at rgear@wisc.edu by November 19.
