Lakefront Gateway kicks off May 26 with closure of Lot 1 and part of Langdon Street

AP 11Construction to build an innovative underground loading dock coincides with the city’s Langdon Street utility project.

UW-Madison’s Parking Lot 1, which is off Langdon Street and adjacent to Memorial Union, will close May 26, 2015 to make way for construction of an underground loading dock as part of the Lakefront Gateway project. The plan will remove the surface parking lot, build an underground loading dock, and create Alumni Park on the surface, which will connect the Memorial Union Terrace with Library Mall and will honor the Wisconsin Idea and University of Wisconsin-Madison alumni.

  • The Memorial Union Terrace will not be affected by the construction in Lot 1 during the summer.
  • Parking will no longer be available in Lot 1, but more than 1,400 visitor parking stalls are located within three blocks of Memorial Union in Lots 6, 7 (Grainger Hall), 46, 83 (Fluno Center), and the Lake Street Ramp. Visit http://transportation.wisc.edu/parking/visitor.aspx for more information.
  • Langdon Street, from North Lake Street to Park Street, will be closed from May 26, 2015 to the end of October, 2015.
  • The Langdon street utility project will update underground infrastructure, some dating back to the 1900s, to better serve adjacent buildings and the new underground loading dock.Construction between the Memorial Union and the Red Gym will continue into summer 2016.
  • The Memorial Union, the Pyle Center, and the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) will remain open and accessible to all patrons in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
