Memorial Union Reinvestment

Final Phases

Memorial Union fully opened as of Sept. 15, 2017!

The final phases of MUR addressed needed updates and renovations in the remaining two-thirds of the building: the central core, east wing, and Terrace. This included upgrades to mechanical, fire and sprinkler systems, as well as needed restoration for many of the Memorial Union’s significant spaces including, der Rathskeller, Gekas Commons (formerly known as the Trophy Room), Main Lounge, Tripp Commons, Old Madison, Porter Butts Gallery and the Great Hall. To meet the demands of students and members, the cafeteria-style dining space was upgraded to multiple eateries. Accessibility issues were addressed throughout the central core and east wing, and have been addressed on the historic Terrace space.

The Terrace closed in fall 2015 to address accessibility and many other important updates. This beloved space reopened in mid-May 2016 in time to be part of the class of 2016’s graduation weekend memories. In addition, the east wing and central core portions of the first floor opened in December 2016, revealing the care with which the Union preserved beloved spaces, such as der Rathskeller, and reimagined some spaces, such as the Daily Scoop. The central and east portions of floors two through four reopened on Sept. 15, 2017, marking the completion of the Memorial Union Reinvestment. Click here to see the overall project timeline.

The final phases, specifically the updates to the Terrace, are part of the Lakefront Gateway project, which includes Alumni Park and One Alumni place of the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA). Alumni Park is expected to open on Oct. 6, 2017.
