One of a kind map for Chart Room
A new building is nothing without character. Particularly when that building happens to be the Memorial Union, a campus icon overflowing with character and charm.
UW graduate student Caroline Rose is doing her part to make sure the Memorial Union renovations include plenty of character. Also a Hoofers member, Caroline has taken on a project creating a relief map of Lake Mendota for the brand new Chart Room in the Outdoor UW space.
After designing the piece digitally and making a test map from cardboard, Caroline began cutting a unique composite of materials at a workshop on the east side of Madison at the end of November. The pieces are cut robotically from a machine reading precise digital designs. After each section is cut, the pieces will be layered on top of one another to create a map of the lake.
An inner layer of the material’s composite will be magnetic, meaning that not only will the map surely look aesthetically pleasing in the new space, but it can also be used as a teaching tool.
Check back over the coming weeks as Caroline’s work progresses towards the opening of Phase I next year.
